Sophisticated Kemang!

Some tourist from USA would considered Kemang, the Jakarta southern district equivalent to Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles – the place to go if you want to see the sophisticated side of Jakarta.

Kemang area is pedestrian friendly and safe for tourist or foreigner to live in. Kemang is also home to a number of fashion boutiques and restaurants. Kemang Area famous as well for batik and crafts. The traditional fabric has been reclaimed by the hottest local designers, and is in vogue again.

Edward Hutabarat’s boutique store (2/F, Jalan Kemang Raya 1, 21 719 7989) offers batik creations with a modern twist. This shop is for the more discerning – well, rich – clientele with dresses starting at about USD 70.

Food-wise, Kemang offers something a bit different from Indonesian staples. There’s a surprising selection of Italian restaurants to choose from. International chain Pizza Marzano (Jalan Kemang Raya No.12, 21 719 5351. Open daily 11am-11pm) has a huge selection of wines, and meals.

La Scala Restaurant & Lounge (Jalan Kemang Raya No.2, 21 719 4051 52. Open Mon-Fri 11am-10pm, Sat-Sun 11am-12pm) is a higher-end experience but wine lovers will appreciate great deals like three-for-two on selected bottles.

There’s Indonesian fare to be had at Payon (Jalan Kemang Raya No.17, 21 719 4826. Open daily 11am-11pm). This Javanese-style pavilion restaurant has a sizeable manicured garden out back and an open kitchen so you can watch your dishes being prepared.

Fast food? You will find Japanese food Hoka-Hoka Bento, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Wendy's, Kentucky Fried Chicken.
